Free Things to do in PR, East Side

Check out our list of free things to do in Puerto Rico on the east side of the island.

With the rise of gas prices and existent inflation, thank goodness there are plenty of free experiences to be had on the Isle of Enchantment.

The east side of Puerto Rico is home to an abundance of beautiful beaches, the El Yunque National Park and forest as well as the jumping off point to many smaller islands including Culebra and Vieques.

Beaches

There are numerous beaches to access. All beach access is free, however, the ability to access a beach may not be easy and the parking may not be free. Be aware that the more amenities a beach has access to, the more likely it will be crowded and less likely to have free parking spaces. Balnearios are designated public beaches which often have paid parking lots, life guards, rest rooms and showers. All other beaches don’t have lifeguards and thus you are swimming at your risk. Be aware of rip currents no matter what time of year it is. Please leave your beach cleaner than it was when you arrived!

Luquillo Beach has plenty of free parking behind the Kioskos.. There is a beach parking lot for $4, if you can’t find free parking. Life guards available on weekends or during peak season. Depending on the time of year there are vendors where you can rent chairs, umbrellas and water sport experiences. Plenty of restaurants nearby to grab a bite to eat.

Seven Seas is a popular beach in Fajardo. There is some free parking, however it does get very congested and it is more likely you will need to pay for parking which ranges from $4-$10. There are restaurants, some vendors, paddle board and kayak rentals. The beach area to the left has lifeguards during peak season. The bay is protected by an offshore reef so it is calm and safe most of the time.

Playa Azul has gorgeous blue and turquoise waters, plenty of palms perfect for hanging a hammock and enjoying the tropical breezes. Parking is free but limited especially on the weekends. The water can often be rough, but at certain times of the year the color of the water is mesmerizing. If it’s calm, it is a great snorkeling spot; if you have snorkel gear it's the ultimate free activity! La Pared beach down to the right side is a popular surf spot. Please be aware of water conditions at all times as rip currents are often present.

Playa Guayanes is an underrated beach in Yabucoa. There aren’t any amenities but there are plenty of palm trees to string up a hammock and enjoy the large flat beach and protected bay. No parking fees.

Hiking

Park at the entrance of the Corredor Ecologico del Noreste in Luquillo and walk the dirt road all the way to the beach! Most of the path is shady, but make sure you pack water, a hat and sunscreen. It’s about 2.4 km/1.5 miles to the beach.

Angelito Trail, a short 0.8 km/0.5 mile hike from the road leads to a large swimming hole. The trail is outside of the El Yunque park entrance boundary so no entry ticket is needed. It is very popular, as it is one of the easiest swimming holes to access. It is best to avoid weekends if you want to find parking on the side of the road. There is no parking lot.

Specialty

Did you know that the East Side boasts a drive-in movie theater, and it’s free?! On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings La Finca Naguabo offers free drive-in movies. Showings are at 6:30pm most of the year and 7:30pm during the summer. Movies are shown in English. They often have specialty events such as baseball during the world series, or pride events. Check their calendar at www.lafincanaguabo.com to see what’s playing and to verify showtimes.

Famous Machos Sports Bar in Luquillo has free salsa dancing on Tuesdays from 7pm to 10pm. Wednesdays there’s Karaoke also from 7pm to 10pm. Visit their Facebook page for an up to date schedule of events: https://www.facebook.com/famousmachos
