The General Archive of Puerto Rico (AGPR) will present the exhibition Voz entre tintas - Dibujo y gráfica en torno a la obra de René Marqués (Voice Between Inks - Drawings and Graphics on the Work of René Marqués) this Wednesday, June 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Education Department. This exhibition, the result of a partnership between the AGPR and the Museo de Arte Dr. Pío López Martínez of the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey, is an edited version of the exhibition that will be presented at the University Museum in 2020 on the occasion of the centennial of the birth of the Puerto Rican playwright, novelist, short story writer, essayist, critic, screenwriter and journalist René Marqués (Arecibo, 1919 - San Juan, 1979). This new presentation will focus on René Marqués' work as an educational writer, a facet he exercised between 1950 and 1969 as editor and director of the editorial section of the then Division of Community Education (DIVEDCO), attached to the former Department of Public Instruction.

The exhibition highlights Marqués' pedagogical writings in conjunction with the important graphic work produced at DIVEDCO by the most renowned artists of the 1950s generation, who illustrated and gave visual form to the texts written mainly by René Marqués. The work of writing and editing educational texts and films was part of a project of outreach and social justice whose purpose was to educate the adult population of the country in the mid-twentieth century through basic education brought to the communities through books, pamphlets, films, posters, and lectures. The essence of this educational project was to promote the development of skills among citizens that would enable them to solve their problems of health, education, social life and cooperation through community action. Among the artists represented in the exhibition, in addition to the work of René Marqués, are renowned artists such as Rafael Tufiño, Lorenzo Homar, Carlos Raquel Rivera, Julio Rosado del Valle, Antonio Maldonado, Carlos Osorio, José Meléndez Contreras and Isabel Bernal.

A selection of eighty-five original drawings and engravings created as illustrations for the booklets published by DIVEDCO are part of the exhibition curated and designed by Mariel Quiñones Vélez, curator of the Museo de Arte Dr. Pío López Martínez. The educational books and graphic materials produced by DIVEDCO stand out for their balanced graphic design and meticulous attention to graphic communication from an aesthetic dimension. These materials are part of the important collections in the custody of the General Archive of Puerto Rico and are presented to the public as a sample of the unrepeatable and extraordinary work carried out by a group of artists and writers from an invaluable educational and artistic management promoted by the Government of Puerto Rico.

This exhibition will be inaugurated on Wednesday, June 14, at 7:00 p.m. and will be open to the public free of charge from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at the General Archive of Puerto Rico, located at 500 Ave. Constitución, Puerta de Tierra, San Juan.
