Casa de Montecristo — Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. My unfriendly friendly. I’ve been looking forward to this visit since my daughter’s team booked their volleyball tournament in Puerto Rico. Our first night exploring Old San Juan, I actually walked past Casa de Montecristo without going inside. Wifey and I were enjoying the city, and she had issued her own non-negotiable transfer demand: Anita’s Gelato. Happy wife... So today we returned to Old San Juan for more ice cream, but this time I had a demand of my own. Today, I finally visited CDM. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the anticipation. From the moment I started asking questions, the service felt almost as if I were wasting someone’s time. I don’t drink, so as beautiful as the bar is, it held no interest for me. I was there for cigars—grab a few transfers for Humidor FC (my home humidor) and continue exploring the island. Even a simple request like, “Can you refill my lighter?” No gas. Okay. Matches? Nope. At a cigar lounge That one threw me. But what really made the experience underwhelming was watching others receive attention while I waited, especially considering there were only three customers in the place when I arrived. And I still made my purchases. Maybe being a grab-and-go customer doesn't generate the same revenue as someone settling into the bar for the afternoon. I understand that. But service shouldn't depend on whether I'm ordering from the bar or buying cigars to take home. I’ve visited Casa de Montecristo before, which is probably why this one bothered me more. This simply wasn't the CDM experience I've come to expect. I came in expecting a friendly. Turns out the friendly wasn't very friendly. And I'm actually glad I didn't bring the other dads who made the trip with me. I had considered bringing them over because I expected CDM to be an easy recommendation. After today's experience, that would've been embarrassing. Beautiful location. Beautiful lounge. Plenty of eye candy for a cigar smoker. But today? Disappointed is really all I can say. At least Wifey got her gelato. Again. No rating on food. I didn't purchase anything but cigars. This is solely about service and atmosphere. And trust CDM this is not the review I wanted to write being this would be my only visit. I haven't been back to Puerto Rico in almost 27 years. And if you knew how much I love the Dallas location.... you'd be embarrassed for me. I spent $51 this visit.
