An Absolutely Amazing Bioluminescent Bay Experience! Our 8:00 PM tour in Mosquito Bay, Vieques was absolutely incredible! From start to finish, we had such a wonderful experience. Our tour guide, David, was fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable, and friendly, and he made the entire tour both fun and informative. You could tell he genuinely enjoyed sharing his knowledge with us. He taught us about the history of Mosquito Bay and how the bay came to be, and he even pointed out and explained some of the constellations in the night sky. It made the experience so much more than just a kayak tour. And then there was the bioluminescence—WOW! It was so bright and beautiful. Watching the water light up when we touched it, seeing the glowing trails from our oars as we paddled, and watching the water as we traveled through the bay—it was like Star Wars and was something we will never forget. It truly felt magical. David did an outstanding job making sure everyone was safe, our group was traveling together, comfortable, engaged, and having a great time. His knowledge and personality really made the experience special. We had an amazing time with JAK Watersports and would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Vieques or Puerto Rico. If you are considering booking a bioluminescence tour, do it—and ask for David if you can! This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! 🌌✨🛶🌊

Extremely Disappointing Experience – The Moon Conditions Should Be Disclosed We paid around $70 for the clear kayak bioluminescent experience, expecting to see one of Puerto Rico’s most incredible natural phenomena. Unfortunately, we ended up with regular kayaks and, more importantly, we saw virtually no bioluminescence at all. What was particularly frustrating was that, before even starting the excursion, our guide told the entire group something along the lines of: “I’m going to be clear with you all: the moon is too bright tonight, so these are not the best conditions to see the bioluminescence. Don’t hate me, it’s nature.” I completely understand that nature cannot be controlled. Weather and natural conditions can change, and I would never blame a company for something genuinely unpredictable. However, the moon cycle is predictable. Moonlight is one of the biggest factors affecting how well you can see bioluminescence, and the darkest nights around the new moon are generally the best conditions. So if the company already knows that the moon will be extremely bright and that the bioluminescence will be difficult to see, why are they still selling these time slots as a bioluminescent kayak experience? In our case, we paid approximately $70 and essentially spent the evening sitting in a kayak listening to explanations about astronomy and which stars we were looking at. The information was interesting, but that is not what we paid for. We came specifically to see the bioluminescent water, and we saw essentially nothing. The fact that the tour started with the guide apologizing and warning everyone about the moon conditions made the situation even more frustrating. It clearly shows that the company is aware that certain conditions can make the experience extremely disappointing, yet they continue selling those time slots. The guide himself was very nice, friendly, and professional, and this review is absolutely not a criticism of him. He was simply doing his job and was honest with us about the conditions. My issue is with the company’s business practice. If they know the moon will make the bioluminescence extremely difficult to see, they should be transparent about it before customers pay and either offer different dates or provide an alternative excursion, such as a sunset or regular night kayak tour. Instead, customers pay full price for a bioluminescent experience that the company already knows may be barely visible. Honestly, the company needs to stop scamming people and start being transparent about the conditions. Nature is not the problem. Selling an experience while knowing beforehand that the main attraction is unlikely to be visible is the problem. Very disappointing and definitely not worth $70 under these conditions.
