La Canterina: CMPR Opera Workshop

San Juan, P.R. – The Opera Workshop of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, under the artistic direction of Professor Ricardo Sepúlveda, presents La Canterina, an opera buffa in two acts composed by Joseph Haydn. This event will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. and repeats on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. in the Jesús María Sanromá Room of the Bertita and Guillermo L. Martínez Theater.

Under the stage direction of Provi Seín, the participation of the Symphony Orchestra of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, conducted by maestro Roselín Pabón and Pedro Juan Jiménez on the harpsichord; This production promises to transport audiences to a world of humor, music and charm. La Canterina will be presented in Italian with Spanish supertitles.The work has the stellar participation of Prismarie Calderón, Adrinelle Chiesa, Camila Cruz, Grecia González, Jorge J. Marrero, Frances Martínez, Natalia Nieves, Carlos Ortiz, Jeroy Ramos and Angélica Sastre, who will give life to the characters of this musical comedy .La canterina is a comic opera in two acts composed by Joseph Haydn. The plot follows the adventures of Gasparina, a young opera singer who tries to advance her career with the help of her "theatrical mother", Apollonia. Gasparina, with her charm and vocal abilities, attracts the attention of several men, including the wealthy, single music teacher Don Pelagio, who becomes involved in a game of manipulation and deception. As the story progresses, conflicts between the characters are revealed, including Gasparina and Apollonia's attempts to improve their social standing through strategic relationships. The plot develops with comic situations and romantic entanglements, and culminates in a denouement where the characters face the consequences of their actions and conflicts are resolved in a fun and satisfying way. La canterina is a work full of humor, charming music and colorful characters, typical of the 18th century opera buffa style.

The Opera Workshop of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music is a vocal, theatrical and musical production laboratory that offers singing students the opportunity to develop their artistic skills and perform before the public in a variety of operatic productions.
