The ballet company Mauro Ballet takes the stage of the Santurce Fine Arts Center with a different proposal of the iconic ballet Romeo y Julieta. The performance for the general public will take place on Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m.

Mauro Ballet begins its ballet season with a version of Shakespeare's love story, choreographed by Katherine Morey and Marena Pérez, important figures of ballet in Puerto Rico. Through the direction of both, the choreographies seek to bring the passion, drama and beauty of Romeo and Juliet. Two characters who fall passionately in love, but their families become involved in a deadly dispute.

“For this production, we have sought to capture the essence of Shakespeare's work, exploring the depth of emotions and complexity of the characters. We hope audiences will be moved by the story of Romeo and Juliet and enjoy the beauty of classical ballet,” Morey said.

The ballet Romeo and Juliet presents the story of the literary work of two young lovers from enemy families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Their forbidden love will lead them to challenge social norms and face the consequences of a society divided by resentment.

For Marena Pérez, director and founder of the Mauro Ballet company, the version combines classic ballet steps, accompanied by performances and projections. “We have worked hard to create dynamic and emotional choreography that reflects the passion and drama of the work. Like every version of Mauro, which combines classical ballet with other areas of art, we integrated cinematography. Through the art of photography and visual storytelling we will guide the audience through this story of love and tragedy. We are sure that this production will be an unforgettable experience for all attendees,” she added.

The stage production will feature more than 35 dancers along with the characters and main dancers of Mauro Ballet. Under the music of Sergei Prokofiev, the role of Juliet will be played by Betina Ojeda and Yenessis Marzan, her lover Romeo, will be Luis Victor Santana. On the other hand, Estevalier Olivieri will be the character of Mercutio, Aureo Andino as Tybalt, Leonardo González as Benvolio, and the Count of Paris will be played by Jesús Sánchez and Louis Martínez.

The general public performance of Romeo and Juliet will take place on Saturday, April 13, at 8:00 p.m., in the René Marqués Room of the Luís A. Ferrer Fine Arts Center. Student functions will be held on Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12 at 9:30 a.m.
